每到新年，纽约时代广场都会成为全球关注的焦点，上百万来自世界各地的人汇集在这等待跨年狂欢。想知道纽约跨年为何如此经典，一探究竟吧~

新年球是这场跨年仪式的重头戏，首个水晶球于1907年降临在时代广场上空，象征着让世界充满光明。这颗被水晶和LED灯包裹着的水晶球，可以说是真正意义上的夜空中最亮的星~

Time Square Ball, the crystal ball that lit up first in 1907, brought light and happiness to New York Time Square. It is also said to be the brightest star in the night sky. 

为什么会用水晶球来庆祝新年呢？

水晶球来源于一颗“时间球”，最早出现在十九世纪中叶的英国港口，每至正午12点，巨型圆球从杆子上落下，远在海上的船员们看到后，就可以以此校准时间。

Time Square Ball originated from a ball at a English harbor, which signals 12 o'clock at noon everyday for the sailors at sea, then the ball will drop to the bottom of the pole. 

在美国，由于自1907年开始禁放烟花，当年《纽约时报》的老板奥克斯（Adolph Ochs）顺势突发奇想，在《时报》大楼的楼顶，用铁和木头制作成了一颗球，再加上100多个灯泡做装饰，在跨年之际，球自高而下缓缓降落，这就是历史上第一个庆祝新年开始的“水晶球”。

In 1907, America banned fireworks, which triggered Adolph Ochs to have the idea of building a crystal ball at Time Square, with more than 100 lights surrounding it. On New Years Eve every year, the Time Square Ball will slowly drop to the bottom to signal the arrival of a new year. 

今年的水晶球主题是“宁静之礼”(Gift of Serenity)”，联盟主席 Tim Tompkins解释：“2017为艰难一年，美国充满愤怒及刻薄咒骂，社会需要‘宁静’，让我们在倒数一刻安静下来，回望过年一年，展望2018年愤怒减少，让世界重回正轨、更美好”。

为预防恐袭，今年时报广场跨年倒数活动场地安保系数再度升级，在31日下午3点前，人们已经陆续抵达现场接受安检入场。（不背双肩包、提大手袋，不带雨伞，这样可以加速进场的速度）

In order to prevent terrorism, the security level of Time Square grew once again this year. On the 31st of December around 3pm, some people already arrived to start the security check procedure.

水晶球将在31日下午6点升上球柱并亮灯，之后现场工作人员会发放各种帽子、气球、喇叭之类的小道具。晚上8时，现场表演正式开始。

每年都会有盛大的歌舞表演，今年的演唱会阵容也比以往更加强大，牛姐Mariah Carey、小甜甜Britney Spears、Kelly Clarkson，Charlie Puth、Shawn Mendes等众星轮番登场。

Time Square Ball will rise up at 6pm, then the staff of the event will start handing out hats, balloons and other props to the crowd. The big show will start at 8pm, featuring some of the most famous stars such as Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, and much more. 

水晶球降落之后，主办方将从各个周边大楼顶撒下成吨的彩色纸屑，漫天飞舞的彩色飘纸，非常壮观。在此之前主办方会测试撒纸屑，保证不会划伤观众的眼睛，所以迄今为止，从未有人受伤。

After the lowering of the Time Square Ball, tons of confetti will come down from the sky. If you were to miss out on the event for some reason, you can also watch it online.
